After he graduated from Fengyuan Public School, he entered Taichung First Junior High School, and then he passed the test of Taipei High School. In 1939, he graduated from Chinese Philosophy Department of Empire University in Tokyo and came back to Taiwan University to teach the course of Chinese Literature. Later he participated in establishing Yuanping University. After that, he suffered the bitter of White Terror. Zhangdongfeng and Luheruo were neighbors and were very close at that period. First, they planned go to Japan to keep from the White Terror, but then they came back to Taichung. After they parted at the station, Luheruo went back Tanzi and to the mountain. Some people said that he was bitten and dead by the snake. After Zhangdongfeng went back to the old house in Fengyuan, he hid himself everywhere, the house of relatives, friends, the tenant farmers, and even the graveyard. Fortunately, he escaped under the shadow of horror and death. In the age of fifty, he came back to Fengyuan; and then, he abandoned the literature and started doing business. He died in 1968.

His main works were poetry. He had lots of Japanese poems, such as the Traveler and the Footprint and Chinese poem of Sorrow. He ever translated Laoshe¡¦s work, Divorce, to Japanese; besides, he wrote two essays of My Alma Mater and Two Celebrated New Year and one short story of the Daughter of Acai
