Location

Shihkang Township locates in the north-east of Taichung County and the midstream vally among Tachia River and Sinshe River stairs. Tungshih Township is in the north boundary separated by Tachia River, Sinshe Township in the south, and Fengyuan City connected to the west. The total floor space is 18.2105 square kilometers, which is the smallest township of Taichung County.

Characterastics

Before the Chinese immigrantion to Taiwan, there were already aborigines lived there. Only the aborigines could be roughly divided into Mountain and Pingpu tribe; the former one who seclude in remote mountains are so-called " the indigenous uneducated natives " and the other one who live on plain fields are so-called "the mature illiterate natives". The surrounded mountains of Shihkang Township were places that mountain tribes in activities, so we especially make description here. Shihkang Township is a historical Hakka habitation where bristle with kitchens, especially the soil cow community was an important inhabitation of early Hakka reclaimination. It was said that during Qian Long Dynasty, the Cantonese immigrants reclaimed land from here. Since they frequently had conflicts with aborigines, government thereby set a specific boundary that had a epigraph indicated no Chinese intruder allowed for private cultivation in 26th year of Qian Long Dynasty. Moreover, they digged a cow ditch and built 19 soil made "soil cows" by using that soil digged out, which is the origin of soil cow. Meanwhile the "soil cow boundary epigraph" represents a meaning of special historical and space landmark between Hakka groups and aboriginal gourps.

History

The original name of Shihkang Township was "Shihkounya", since two rivers flow north from Golden Star Villiage are join at the south of Shihkang Villiage and the shape of vally mouth look like a "pot", plus there are rocks all over the places that generated the name. In addition, because the township locates on sandbank of south coast of Tachia River, early ancestor built their home on vally that full of rocks and stacked a dam by rock that formed a conduit for irrigation. That is the origin of the byname "Shishkangya", that is the smallest township of Taichung County. The name had been changed into "Shihkang" at 1920 (year 9 of the Taisho Imperial Era). Shihkang Township was included in Gedung up bastion with Dungshih Township and Fengyuan Township in middle of Qian Long Dynasty, which was reorganized as " Gedung up bastion of Taiwan County, Taiwan Prefecture" until year 13 of Kuang Hsu Dynasty. During the early years of colonial era (year 28 of Meiji Imperial Era, year 21 of Kuang Hsu Dynasty), it was juristed by registration office of Gedung up bastion, Hulu Knoll in Taichung County, where set a chief of Shihgang area supervising Shihgangya Villa, Shiehtang Filed, Sheliao Corner, Soil Cow and Puzaico Villa and so on.
Until July year 9 of Taisho Imperial Era (1920) of colonial era, there was a big revolutional implementation of local policy that devided Taiwan into five continents and three offices, followed by regions and streets. Where the Tainchung had been changed to continent and bastion to region, while Shihgang Township was renamed as Shihgang Vally, Dungshih Region of Taichung Continent. After Taiwan recovery in 1945, Shihgang was reorganized as Shihgang Township, Dungshih area of Taichung County. Until the end of 1950, the area offices were ended and renamed as Shihgang Township of Taichung County to now. There are total 10 villiages 116 neighborhoods in present jurisdiction with population of 15,277.
